    • Notes from Betty Harper: "David was born in Stockbridge, Mass., Feb. 14,1775 in a log hut. He received the rudiments of his education from hismother and attended the academy at Lennox, Mass., during one term. Atthe age of eighteen he began teaching and continued for more than thirtyseasons. At the same time he managed his own productive farm, whichyielded more than farms of greater size owing to his practical knowledge,strength of mind and body, and his use of every farm implement. Oct. 15,1804, he married Rebecca Smalley, born Dec. 3, 1778 youngest daughter ofRev. John Smalley, D.D. of New Britain, Conn. Mr. Whitlesey commencedbusiness as a merchant in Lenox, Mass., but soon removed to the farm ofDr. Smalley, where he continued throughg life. He was justice of thepeace and a representative to the Legislature of Conn. He was one of thedeacons of the Cong. Church of New Britain for 44 years and was Supt. ofthe first Sunday School organized in the county March 1816. He died July21, 1851. Mrs. Whittlesey died Jan. 8, 1838."
