    • He entered the US Naval Academy as an acting Midshipman in 1860, became a Midshipman in July 1862, and Ensign in May 1863, a Master in 1865, Lieutenant in 1866 and Lieutenant Commander in March 1868. Immediately after graduation he was ordered to the ship Housatonic in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron , when that ship was blown up by a torpedo boat off Charleston, South Carolina in 17 February 1864. He commanded a division at the nightassault on Fort Sumter by Com. Thomas H. Stevens and sustained injuries therein and was detailed to special duty of occupation at a battery on Morris Island. He was involved in various attacks at Confederate batteries in Stone River during 1864. He participated in the joint expedition of naval and military forces to cut the Charleston and Savannah Railway in 1864. While commanding a launch from the Housatonic he was stationed inside Morris Island to prevent Confederate communications he captured Major Walley and a boat crew. He served in the attacks on Fort Gregg and Fort Wagner and at the evacuation of Morris Island he capture three boats with 80 men. The exposure which he experienced in the Civil War led to his eventual retirement in April 1881. In 1865-67 he served oon the Colorado, which was attached to the European Station. Afterwards he was ordered to the Pacific Squadron where he was commander of the steam sloop Wampanoag in 1868, of the Powhatan in 1868-69, of the store ship Onward in 1869, of the Nyack 1870-71 if the Independence in 1872 In 1872-75 he was executive officer on the Kearsarge and later of the Monocacy in Chinese waters and later did duty at Mare Island Naval Yard in California from 1876-1878. He was held in high esteem by his superior officers.
